The Big Island: Is the Place of Refuge worth a visit?

Generally, museums and typical touristy areas are places I avoid when on vacation. I tend to prefer being part of the adventure rather than reading a wall plaque about some else’s adventure.

But because I had nothing better to do and was spending my day just randomly driving around the Big Island, I decided to take the advice of some Big Island locals and check out the Place of Refuge.  It turned out to be kind of cool.

In the old days, if you broke a law in Hawaii, the punishment was death – but there was one way you could avoid this fate.  You could escape to puuhonua or the place of refuge. If you made it here, you could not be harmed. But you had to live there and it must have been pretty boring as people got creative with their time and made some pretty amazing statues.
